The world begins with by Elizabeth Osmond

The world begins with

white bread toast

just crisp enough

to hold a fold

like a birthday card.

Strong tea, bag left in

margarine scraped

from the corner of a pot

by a hand which still tingles

holding a blue-striped plate.

A newborn life

in a Perspex cot.
