Morning News by Nina Parmenter

Morning News

Overnight, more people have been sunk by cruelty

than I have ever met.

I put them in my pocket. Grab my coat,

and tethered to the nose of the dog

am jolted over the stile

into the field with the old oaks.

Is it not a miracle

that this field survives our petulance

and our headlines,

and are these not miracles:

the softness in the ground

that has risen with the rain,

the leaves that have dropped in faultless sprigs,

their brief garnish of bronze.
